Denmark vs England predictions
England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia was a game of two very different halves.
The Three Lions dominated the first 45 minutes, taking the lead through Jude Bellingham and looking in full control right up until the referee called time on the opening period.
The objective in the second half would have been to keep Serbia at arm’s length and extend their lead. That might even have allowed them to rest some of their main men in the closing stages.
Instead, Serbia came out for the second half with renewed vigour and England struggled to match it. The pre-tournament favourites sank ever deeper and ceded possession ever more easily.
Serbia created a few openings and, on another night, they could easily have scored from one of them. This did not look like a recipe for future success from Gareth Southgate’s side, with the manager once again coming under fire after the final whistle.
Of course, the most important thing was that England picked up all three points on matchday one. That 1-0 defeat of Serbia takes the pressure off ahead of this tussle with Denmark.
But there is no doubt that England fans will be looking to see more from their team in this match, which pits them against stronger opposition in Denmark.
We could see some tinkering from Southgate, who is likely to bring an end to the experiment of playing Trent Alexander-Arnold alongside Declan Rice in midfield. One of Connor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton will probably get the nod here.
Further forward England must get Harry Kane more involved in the game after a quiet night against Serbia. And they will also be looking for a bigger contribution from Phil Foden, who has flattered to deceive for much of his senior international career to date.
England’s performance in their first game was a wake-up call. Yet while it always felt a little odd that they were the outright favourites to win the trophy this summer, it is important to avoid overreacting to a sub-par showing against Serbia. England still have time to get things right.
Denmark vs England betting tips
England will be looking to make it six points from six when they take on Denmark in Group C.
England to win – 4/6 (Betfred)
Denmark will still be kicking themselves that they did not take all three points from their first game against Slovenia.
Christian Eriksen gave his side the lead early on and Denmark dominated possession for most of the encounter. But they ultimately let the game drift and their failure to extend their one-goal advantage allowed Slovenia to get back into it in the second half.
A 1-1 draw means Kasper Hjulmand’s side has plenty of work to do. In short, they must beat one of England or Serbia to stand a realistic chance of advancing to the round of 16.
Denmark pushed Southgate’s side into the semi-finals of Euro 2020, but they have gone backwards since then.
That is not to say they are incapable of causing England problems, and John Stones and Marc Guehi will be tested by a front two of Rasmus Hojlund and Jonas Wind. Even so, England should prove too strong.
Over 2.5 goals – 6/5 (bet365)
It will be interesting to see if Denmark sticks with the same attack-minded formation they chose against Slovenia. Eriksen was deployed as a No.10 on matchday one behind Wind and Hojlund up top.
Even if they drop Wind for another midfielder, Denmark will not be afraid of committing bodies to attack against England. There are question marks over the latter’s defence and Hojlund has long encouraged his side to be proactive where possible.
Equally, England will be conscious of the fact they were poor in the second half against Serbia.
Even if they are in the lead on Thursday, we should see Southgate’s side make more of an effort to avoid dropping too deep and allowing their opponents back into the game.
All in all, this promises to be an entertaining encounter in Group C.
Jude Bellingham to score any time – 13/5 (talkSPORT BET)
Bellingham was England’s standout performer by some distance against Serbia.
He took the game by the scruff of its neck in the first half in particular, scoring a fine header and always showing for the ball.
Bellingham thrived as a goalscoring attacking midfielder for Real Madrid in 2023/24 and Southgate has given him the same role at the European Championship.
He timed his run perfectly for the winning goal last time out, crashing into the box at precisely the right moment.
Bellingham showed in his debut season at Madrid that he can score different types of goals and he will be a threat in every match he plays at this tournament.
