While three of Oklahoma’s border states have legalized sports betting, the Sooner State has yet to legalize sports betting despite having the most tribal casinos (over 130) of any state.

Here’s what you need to know about the state’s journey toward legalizing sports betting.

Oklahoma Sports Betting Sites

After an effort to legalize sports betting in 2022 failed, Governor Kevin Stitt proposed House Bill 1027, which would have 体育博彩合法化 in the state. While the bill passed through the House, it failed in the Senate, with a source telling Stillwater News Press that the gap between Stitt and the state’s gaming tribes was too substantial to get the industry off the ground.

In November 2023, Stitt announced a new plan that would allow Oklahomans to place in-person bets at gaming sites operated by federally recognized tribes. If it passes, the plan would legalize mobile sports betting in the state with each sportsbook partnering with a licensed Native American casino.

In the meantime, Oklahoma residents can play daily fantasy sports for money through sites like FanDuel and DraftKings.

Legal Sports Betting Age

As mentioned above, sports betting isn’t legal in Oklahoma, so the state doesn’t have a legal sports betting age yet. If sports betting does become legal in Oklahoma, the legal age will likely be 21 years old, as that’s the legal sports betting age in most other states.

That said, you only need to be 18 to play DFS or gamble at certain casinos in Oklahoma. However, states tend to be more cautious with sports betting and have a higher age limit.

Professional Sports Teams in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the state’s lone professional sports team. The Thunder came to Oklahoma City on July 2, 2008, when the Seattle SuperSonics relocated from the West Coast.

OKC enjoyed immediate success with its core of James Harden, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, all of whom went on to win MVPs in their NBA careers. The Thunder reached the NBA Finals in 2012 but fell to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in five games.

Durant, Harden and Westbrook all eventually moved on, leaving Oklahoma City without winning a championship. After rebuilding in the early 2020s, the Thunder returned to contention with a new core in 2023-24, earning the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

Before the Thunder arrived, Oklahoma City hosted the New Orleans Hornets during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 NBA seasons when the Hornets were forced to temporarily relocate in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Hornets’ brief stint proved that Oklahoma City was capable of supporting an NBA team.

College Teams in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is passionate about college sports with four Division I programs in the state.

  • Oklahoma Sooners

One of the most recognizable teams in college sports, the Sooners are a powerhouse on the gridiron and have won seven National Championships. They were a juggernaut in the late 2010s under coach Lincoln Riley, who coached three No. 1 draft picks (Baker Mayfield, Kyler and Caleb Williams) during his time there before moving on to USC.

Oklahoma’s basketball team has flourished lately as well. It produced a No. 1 draft pick in 2009 (Blake Griffin) and made six NCAA Tournament appearances in the 2010s. Some notable recent alumni include Buddy Hield and Trae Young, with Hield’s team making it all the way to the Final Four in 2016.

  • Oklahoma State Cowboys

While the Cowboys have always lived in the shadow of the Sooners, they’re still a quality Power Five team.

In football, they have a claimed National Championship (1945), an unclaimed National Championship (2011) and one Heisman winner (Barry Sanders). They played in a bowl game in every year of the 2010s and have a signature rivalry with the Sooners known as the Bedlam Series.

The Cowboys are Big 12 royalty on the hardwood, advancing to more NCAA Championships and Final Fours than any team in the conference except Kansas. They won back-to-back national titles in 1945-46 and produced Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

  • Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

A member of the Summit League, the Golden Eagles had their best season on the hardwood in 1974 when they advanced to the Elite Eight. They also put together a Cinderella run in 2021 when star guard Max Abmas led them to three-point victories over Ohio State and Florida en route to the Sweet Sixteen.

  • Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

The pride of the American Conference, Tulsa has an undergraduate enrollment of just 3,740 – the smallest of all FBS schools. Their last conference championship came in 2012 when they were a member of Conference USA, but they have produced notable professional players like Glenn Dobbs and Steve Largent.

The Hurricanes have had some postseason glory on the hardwood, winning the NIT twice (1981, 2001) and the CBI once (2005). Their best NCAA Tournament finish came in 2000 when they made it to the Elite Eight.
